Bankat Sadan Shegaon: Gajanan Maharaj Connection, History & Visit Guide

20 October 2026 4 min read Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan Bhakt Niwas

Quick Answer: Bankat Sadan Shegaon is the old home of Bankatlal Agarwal, the devotee who first recognised Shri Gajanan Maharaj, and Maharaj lived here for about two years. You will find it in Juni Vasti, roughly 1 to 1.5 km from the Samadhi Mandir, and it is open to devotees daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For directions, see our Shegaon location page.

Most devotees come to Shegaon for darshan at the Samadhi Mandir, take mahaprasad and head home. Far fewer walk into the old town to see the house where Maharaj first lived. If you have an hour or two to spare, the walk is worth it. Here is what Bankat Sadan is, what you will see inside, and how to fit it into your Shegaon one-day itinerary.

What is Bankat Sadan?

Bankat Sadan was once a family home. Today it is a Smriti Bhavan — a memorial that keeps Maharaj's first years in Shegaon close to every devotee who visits.

  • A devotee's house: Bankatlal Agarwal brought Maharaj home soon after he first saw him. Devotional literature records that Maharaj lived in this house for about two years.
  • Cared for by the Sansthan: Shri Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan, Shegaon, Dist. Buldhana, Maharashtra, looks after the memorial.
  • One of the Paanch Dhams: Bankat Sadan is officially recognised as one of Shegaon's five holy sites.

Come with the same bhav you bring to the Samadhi Mandir. This is a place of darshan, not a sightseeing stop.

Who was Bankatlal Agarwal?

On 23 February 1878, a young stranger was seen in Shegaon. Others may have seen only an odd young man, but Bankatlal Agarwal sensed a saint, and he took Maharaj home. You can read the full story in Bankatlal and Gajanan Maharaj.

  • The date: 23 February 1878 is the date of Maharaj's first appearance in Shegaon.
  • Prakat Din: The day is celebrated every year as Prakat Din. It follows the Hindu calendar (Magh Krishna Saptami), so the English date shifts each year. Confirm it with the Sansthan office, and if you plan to come for it, read Bhakt Niwas booking during Prakat Din.

Booking opens 60 days before check-in, and festival rooms fill about 15 days ahead. For Prakat Din, message us as soon as booking opens.

What will you see inside?

The old wada has not been lost. What remains of it now sits inside a three-storey building, preserved by the Sansthan.

  • The hall: A large ground-floor hall with traditional carved pillars.
  • Asan and Padukas: Maharaj's original resting bed (asan) and his holy Padukas.
  • Photographs and a statue: Historical photographs and a statue of Bankatlal.
  • The kund: The original water tank where Maharaj was bathed, still kept in the premises.

Photography is strictly prohibited at the inner sanctum, the Padukas and the idols. Keep your phone in your bag and simply sit for a while.
